Snow, freezing rain and rain are underway in the southern Plains as a potent winter storm strengthens Thursday.

The storm system headed for North Carolina this weekend could bring at least a temporary halt to electricity. What you can do right now.

This system will start initially as snowfall Friday afternoon and evening; however, freezing rain and sleet will mix in with the snow Friday night due to warmer air in the upper levels of the atmosphere.

Areas in the north Georgia mountains will see between 3-6 inches of snow with locally higher amounts possible farther north into the mountains. Snowfall totals of 1-2 inches will be common around I-20 with 0.1-0.25 inch of ice possible. The northern suburbs in metro Atlanta will see between 2-3 inches of snow.

A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for the northern half of the ArkLaTex where snow and ice could bring hazardous roads and power outages Thursday into Friday morning. The outlook has improved for the I-20 corridor,

Right now, we are still 48 hours away from the winter event, but as we get closer, it is likely to be upgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory or a Winter Storm Warning.
