Monday night the Virginia Beach NAACP held a town hall meeting to inform the community on the city's 10-1 voting system ahead of a vote expected to happen at Tuesday night's city council meeting.

VIRGINIA BEACH — District 5 City Council candidate L.G. Shaw conceded the race Thursday night after observing election officials who were verifying votes this week. “The opportunity closed on some of the remaining ballots being able to close the gap,” Shaw wrote in a text.

The City Council will vote Tuesday on whether to again ask the General Assembly to change the city charter so that it aligns with the election system Virginia Beach used for the 2022 and 2024 elections.

Of the 10 local election districts in Virginia Beach, 13 candidates from districts 1, 3, 5, 7, and 8 ran for city council this year. Here’s who currently leads in each district: In District 1, Current council member David “Hutch” Hutcheson is leading challenger Ryan Gilliam, 60.92% to 39.08%.
