Apple will now allow AirTag users to share location data with airlines in an effort to make lost luggage a thing of the past.

When Apple introduced its location-tracking device more than three years ago, it quickly became a traveler favorite for one major reason: the ability to keep tabs on checked luggage. Now, AirTags are about to get a major update that will help fliers get reunited with their missing bags.

Apple said Monday that users will be able to share the location of AirTags and other Apple devices directly with airlines.

Apple is rolling out a new “Find My” location service that will be integrated into airline customer service at companies like Delta and United. Passengers who attach an air tag to their luggage will be able to share its live location with the airline,

Savvy travelers have in recent years discovered one of the most helpful hacks while flying: using an Apple AirTag to keep track of checked luggage. The popularity of the quarter-size devices soared during the summer of 2022, when lost luggage was one of the lowlights among many other travel disruptions.

Apple users will soon be able to share the location of lost items with more than 15 airlines. The Share Item Location feature, which is set to be introduced soon through an Apple software update, will let users share the locations of items with third parties.

Apple partnered with over 15 airlines, including Delta and United, as part of a new AirTags feature expected to launch later this year.
